this system isn't possible without Alonso. Xavi and Pirlo both playing in retirement leagues but Alonso is still playing at the highest level in the most demanding role possible. what a legend.

No I am not 10. I turned 26 years old on monday actually. I love Pirlo as you can see I am an AC fan. Pirlo to me is the greatest midfielder of the generation. Xavi and Alonso not far behind. I was just commenting on Alonso's longevity and ability to still be as versatile as ever this late in his career.

I watched the game, and when they were showing the lineups it was a different formation than what footyroom has. It was Alaba, Alonso, and Lahm as the 3 center backs. Then 4 midfielders, from left to right: Bernat, Vidal, Thiago, Muller. And then 3 up front, from left to right: D. Costa, Lewandowski, Robben

This 3-3-3-1 formation was used by Marcelo Bielsa previously, but this is the first time Ive seen it employed in such an effective and fluid fashion. Of course the calibre of players Pep has at his disposal allows him this freedom. It's a thing of beauty really, fundamental to this formation are the well rounded fullbacks on either side, a defensive genius in Alaba, two unbelievably well-rounded midfielders in Alcantara and Vidal and of course players that can beat their man anyday of the week in Costa & Robben. And the complete striker Lewandowski and the attacking genius Mueller.
