Hummels was a Bayern youth player and got tired of not getting picked for the first team. Even when the three first team center halves weren't match fit Bayern bought new ones instead of giving hummels the chance he thought he deserved.
Dortmund gave him the opportunity and Hummels jumped, becoming a regular starter and such. Because of this switch Hunmels father got fired Rumors say he lost it because his son went to Dortmund.
After the Götze transfer Hummels was pretty loud-mouthed about how Götze betrays Dortmund and Bayern is not interesting for him stating he rather plays for Dortmund then winning titles. And now 180 degree turn he wants back to Munich because he misses his family and such.

Ultimately Bayern is taking the best players from their closes rivals. Having BvB without Hummels is their aim. So he's allowed to even fail at Bayern. Imagine if Götze and Lewandowski were sill at Dortmund.
Whatever Hummels wants personally is speculation, but I think the comment from Reddit is great at showing exactly how complicated this really is. Such are human beings and their histories!!
Think its ok if a Player said after 8 good + successful Years where he gave all for the club that he needs a change and he joins his home club for new Challenge (let be the challenge to fight for a place in the starting 11..think he will Bayern show that it was wrong to let him go)..
You must not like what a Player or Club do, but respect him..and be fair..
Many people in this s**t world are hypocrite..they dont understand that there is more as black and white..
