I was not aware Fredy had moved to China. I enjoyed watching him play for Seattle.

Their aim is to increase their national team level, and stop being humiliated because their president loves Football and it's the only sport chinese are failing in it, the problem is that it's the most popular sport in the world. Billionaires are pleasing their government atm and it's a little political cause Chinese doesn't want to look weak even in Football who will become an obligatory sport in school. I'm not against the idea and it's for the nation so if the league can make the national team better it's alright.

If they really want to increase their national team's level, buying really good players for their domestic league isn't going to make that happen. See: NASL, and early days of MLS. The USMNT did not become a solid team on an international level until the proper youth systems were in place. Having Pele, Best, and even Beckham playing here did nothing to inspire young kids to play soccer.

However, having a national team that was worth something, and that the country can get behind does inspire people. America couldn't care less about soccer as a whole for an entire world cup cycle (Seattle and Portland are exceptions) but when the world cup comes along, the entire country follows it. When America has a solid world cup showing, we will always get a solid batch of players who were 5-13 during that world cup. Much of the team we have now was inspired to play the sport by the events of 1994, just like the newcomers are here because of 2002.

Actually it helps, youngsters need role models to progress, when MLS bought aging players, marketting and shirts selling aside, they were proffessional models for homeground players to follow... They have in front of them the level they should reach to be competitive, in training, how they live, how they prepare a game...
Pogba wouldnt have progressed that much if he hadnt that many world class players and specially true proffessional arround him, he trains with Pirlo and Buffon, players who won everything and still have the same hunger.
It may not look so, but buying europeen Football proffessionals will have an impact on future chinese stars, 70% of the Footballer job is learned from older players, so having at least one or two top class ones would help to progress and get ambition.

The purchasing of foreign players will increase the attractiveness of the league for both foreign and domestic players. Playing in the Chinese league will be more prestigious. The youth, however few there may be, will look up to the foreign stars. This will create a small, but decent, generation of Chinese children who idolized the foreign stars and go on to form a squad representing the Chinese national team. They won't do too well, but they will show enough promise to inspire the next generation of Chinese children. This cycle will continue for a few decades until China becomes a force to be reckoned with in the stage of world football. At least, this is how the Chinese hope it's going to wind out to be...

Whatever the case, I support the Chinese efforts to make their domestic league more prestigious. The only problem I have is the ridiculous sums of money they are dishing out for it. It's a bit too high. The reported offer for Oscar that I have read in another thread is what bothers me most. But business is business, and if that's the cost of raising the quality of the Chinese league and they are willing to dish out that much money to bring foreign talent to China... then who can stop them?

Hebei CFFC also announced Ersan Gülüm a few days ago. They will pay 7M € to us.
Also, I've heard that they make their payments in cash and in person. Interesting.

So, I've done some more research into Chinese soccer and realized I've been wrong about a few things.

Most of the clubs who are throwing all this money around are owned by MASSIVE companies. An example would be Guangzhou, who grabbed Martinez. A real estate company bought them and brought them out of the second tier to be champions within a year. Unlike most clubs, which are owned by individuals or families, the big Chinese clubs are owned by these companies that invest heavily into them.

Now, it is worth noting that like the MLS, there are rules regarding squads. There can be no more than five international players per team, and the goalkeeper must be Chinese (no idea why on that last one). There is also a salary cap, but this cap does not apply to the five internationals, just the domestic players. This guarantees that Chinese talent has a chance to develop. From what I understand, youth academies have also been HEAVILY invested in. This fact, plus the talent in the league, suggests that in a generation, China probably will be a legitimate superpower in the beautiful game.

I would not be surprised if China made a play to host a World Cup. It would be massive for the sport in the country, an would ensure a pipeline of future talent.

In the end, I'm less dubious of their methods than I was before I looked into it. However, I will also always be annoyed when money is focused to create talent and success. That however, is simply my opinion.

Interesting stuff.

That was great to read. I'm glad the Chinese are focusing on their domestic talent because at the end of the day that is what's most important. It would be wonderful to have a WC in China and have the Chinese national team reach the top tiers of world football.

Yep. Lavezzi confirmed 100% now. Apparently gets £400,000-a-week.

He's semi happy I'd say.

@jimbet I think it's highly possible that it'll happen. To quote Ed Woodward about Chinese league:

"If nothing else, it's another useful market if we are looking to sell players."

BTW Obafemi Martins has joined Shanghai Shenhua after succesful period in Seattle (atleast I think it was succesful for him)

I wouldn't be surprised if they sell Rooney with his current form, for that big money.
On the other side, I would be surprised if Rooney leaves to China...

We loved Martins in Seattle, he scored more than a goal every two games. Great, great player. I am kind of glad we dropped a striker though, because we needed to fit in Jordan Morris.

On the topic of Rooney, he should go. Realistically, he isn't good enough to be the face of United anymore, and China is the only place we'll be able to offload the monster contract.

@MisterDaniel Forgive me for asking, but do you know about those guy? Are they any good? I'm guessing they are gonna be benched or backup player, not starter for the national team, right?
Edit: Ok, I just read the article in your post and it seem they are pretty decent, I guess I should stop judging player by the league they are playing in.

Don't know anything about Gil, but I watched Renato Augusto a lot back when he played for Bayer Leverkusen. I'm pretty certain he's 30+ years old now, but he used to be fairly decent playmaker about 5-6 years ago. I hope we're talking about the same Renato Augusto though.
