Alonso told Bayern's TV channel: "It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I believe it's the right time.

He added: "I always thought it would be better to quit sooner rather than later. I still feel good, but I believe this is the right moment."

Honours:

World Cup: 2010
EURO Cup: 2008, 2012
Champions League: 2004-05, 2013-14
La Liga: 2011-12
Bundesliga: 2014-15, 2015-16
Copa del Rey: 2010-11, 2013-14
FA Cup: 2005-06
DFB-Pokal: 2015-16
UEFA Super Cup: 2005
SuperCopa de Espana: 2012
DFL-Super Cup: 2016
Community Shield: 2006

14 games for Eibar, 124 games for Real Sociedad, 210 games for Liverpool, 236 games for Real Madrid, and 106 games to date for Bayern... 44 goals in 690 games at club level. 16 goals in 113 games at international level....

One of my favorite Madridistas, and one of the best midfielders of his generation. Not too many people appreciate what he has done in his career, but Liverpool and Madrid fans will not forget.

After a great career, he follows Lahm. It seems like Bayern Munich will need Borussia Dortmund in a few years.

Ah fock no, not Xabi as well. I think I'm gonna cry. :(

@Dynast You are right mate, he might be under apreciated wich is a shame as he was such an important player for his team at crucial time. Really dissapointed I missed the highlight of his career. Hope the news not too tough to take in, sad to see legend who did great stuff for your club leave the game.

@Emrecan Sadly for BVB, you might be just right. Still really sad to see two great Bayern player go so soon. :(

Lol emre.

If you guys can, check out Steven Gerrard's video message to Xabi. He called Xabi the best midfielder he's ever played with.

@Dynast Yep, saw it, Gerrard and Xabi are clearly still in good term despite Alonso leaving so long ago. Nice to see. :)

Goodbye to a legend. Can't believe we got rid of him so quickly, he could've retired with us!

@Madridista Really should have in my opinion but I believe he will still hold a special place for Real in his heart, don't worry about that. ;)
