Marseille

  • No French side has ever managed to hoist the UEFA Cup- now the UEFA Europa League.
  • Marseille have won only four of their 15 UEFA competition matches against Spanish opposition, losing eight. However, two of those wins came in this season's UEFA Europa League round of 16, when they beat Athletic Club home (3-1) and away (2-1), the latter their first success in Spain at the seventh attempt.
  • Those eight defeats include a 2-0 loss to Valencia in the 2004 UEFA Cup final in Gothenburg. OM got the better of Spanish opponents in their UEFA Intertoto Cup final the following year, defeating Deportivo La Coruña 5-3 on aggregate (0-2 away, 5-1 home).

Atletico Madrid

  • This is Atlético's second UEFA final in Lyon, and they will be hoping for a more positive outcome. They lost 3-0 to Dynamo Kyiv in the 1986 European Cup Winners' Cup at the Stade de Gerland.
  • The clubs' only past fixtures came in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage, Javier Aguirre's Atlético beating Eric Gerets' Marseille 2-1 at home before a goalless draw at the Stade Vélodrome.
  • Atlético's record in 12 matches against French clubs is W6 D5 L1, the only defeat coming at Lens (2-4) in the fourth round of the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup – a result that eliminated them following a first-leg 2-2 draw in Madrid.
  • Atlético's record in 14 European encounters this season is W7 D5 L2. Their only defeat outside Madrid was that 1-0 loss in Lisbon against Sporting.

Predictions

It may 'just' be the Europa League Final, but you have got to believe that Diego Simeone and the rest of the team that has been around the last few years are sick of losing in finals.

They know this is a great chance to lay down a marker for next season, and their talent edge and ability to defend over Marseille should help them overcome being on French soil.

Interesting game... on one hand it would be good for french football if Marseille wins, on the other hand its one of PSGs biggest rivals. The winner will qualify for UCL... but I wonder if the league of the winning team will get an extra spot to UCL?
