Top 5 best free kick specialists of all time

Chelsea, Mexico 70 2607

5.Ronaldinho
4.Pirlo
3.Beckham
2.Mihajlović
1.Juninho

Top 2:

Sinisa Mihajlović

  • Holder of 3 free kick records in Serie A at the best time of Italian football
  • 28 Free kick League goals, in 2015 Pirlo tied his record after Pirlo played 510 matches while Mihajlovic played only 315
  • Scored 11 free kicks in 1 season, 8 in the league from 10 free kick shots
  • In 1 League match he scored 3 goals from 3 free kicks. In another game he had scored a free kick already and then he played paper-rock-scissors with Adriano and lost so Adriano took the next free kick and missed, the next free kick Mihajlovic scored again and said afterwards that if he had won the mini game vs Adriano he would have had another free kick hattrick.

Number 1:

Juninho Pernambucano

  • Scored at least 75 goals from free kicks from any possible angle and position
  • Pirlo said he based his own set piece taking from the technique of Juninho
  • Olympique Lyonnais greatest player

What about current ones? Not that many jump off the page anymore, but Erikson, Giovinco, and Messi are all good shouts I suppose.

Juninho is number one for me because he was dangerous, distance doesn't matter, he could always score a freekick. Would be close between him and Zico tho, Zico probably scored most freekicks in official matches and trained it to perfection, however he wouldn't score long freekicks (since he based them on accuracy/precision). Platini is with them for sure.

Didi, Rivellino and Cubillas are sort of cult heroes/legends but there is maybe a few videos in total of them scoring freekicks. Rogerio Ceni should be in consideration too. So basically:

  1. Juninho
  2. Zico
  3. Platini
  4. Beckham
  5. Mihajlovic

Today it would be:

  1. Calhanoglu
  2. Eriksen
  3. Messi
  4. Payet
  5. Pjanic

No specific order. Wass from Celta is up there too, sadly not much people know about him, but he damn sure knows how to strike a ball.

This is very true, Zico was known for taking free kicks from just standing next to the ball and he was very clinical with no real effort with his body.

There are many good takers, but Mihajlovic & Juninho stands out of this world. I believe I saw this video even before the YouTube was created, just wanted to share..

I know many of you don't follow MLS, but Sebastian Giovinco's free kick ability to relation to goals scored is insane. Since he joined Toronto, he's scored more than DOUBLE the number of goals from free kicks than any other player in any other league.

https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/08/30/giovinco-isnt-just-mls-free-kick-king-he-might-be-worlds

Before I get the MLS goalkeepers crap, I've seen all of his goals. He's boinked 3 in off the post, and one was a pretty horrific deflection, and the rest have all been inch-perfect.

I can't find a video with all 12 for some reason, so here's a few:

This is a dude who left Juventus because he couldn't beat out Carlos Tevez - and how he doesn't get called up to the national team anymore is impossible for me to understand especially with Italy calling up some real question marks at striker recently. As far as free kick specialists go, he's certainly top 5 in the world right now, and I'd nominate him as one of the best.

@Chelsea8 Underated comment. +1 Just love that guy. Wish Willian would start being as good at taking freekick though as last year. :D

@Sunflash Yeah, Giovinco is plenty good when it come to FK... Wish he wasn't though. :(
