Isn't he? I'm pretty sure he is. First of all he's in the 32 man squad, which is the main squad. And in recent weeks he's made it to the first XI which I am assuming that's what you meant. Mourinho sat him out because he wasn't working well enough in defense, he just wants him to improve, just like any great coach would like his players to improve.

@Ryan you're missing the point ,, Mata was never a problem in defense and Mourinho sat him .. i was watching real madrid when Mou put casillas out just to make him improve and look where is casillas now ? The Mou may want the best for his players but not everything has to go on his own way, he brought eto'o which is out of date i don't get this .. don't talk my words as offensive against chelsea just because i'm liverpool fan,, i like chelsea and wish them all the best

There are many superbly and talented player in Chelsea like Oscar (scored vs Korea and Zambia),de Bruyne (scored vs Wales), Schurrle (hatrick vs Sweden) and etc.. But Mata is a vital player for Chelsea.. All player in Chelsea is vital whether he is first eleven or benched..

Ever since Mata started working on the field as Mou wants , he started to make interceptions and help team to transit from defending to attacking . Simple there is your answer . Mou likes hard working box to box midfielders and I like that too ! For example Liverpool has Steve G who is box to box works his socks off ! :)

Mourinho did not put Casilas on the bench so Iker can improve ! Lol Come on . He put him because Iker started messing so much and did not feel the need for improvement . Iker felt he is untouchable . So Mourinho showed him that no one is bigger then a club and if player does not perform , he will warm the bench !

@Marcus you partly right but alot disagree the way Mou treated Casials even when he started to realize that he isn't bigger than the club he didn't find a way back ... and a lot said that about mata that he doesn't belong to the bench. i may agree with you about box to box players but you know in they end every manger do the best for his club and i hope this pay off during this season

@Kyrillos Mata is probably the best player and if not is a game changing player, however I believe that Mou saw something in him that was amiss, be it not working hard enough in training, a slight arrogance or as I assumed because he wasn’t working hard enough to defend in games; the reality of the Chelsea squad is that there are so many quality players who would love to play, and Mou is probably just suggesting to Mata and the team the philosophy: if you play well and work hard you will play. It is the only way to manage such a big squad.

As with Casillas, I don’t follow Real much except for watching highlights for Ronaldo, but there must have been something up because he is being benched again under Ancelotti. And Eto’o, I think he brought him because of our striker problem. He did not want someone who would stay for a long long time, because Lukaku is obviously the future of Chelsea. If you look at it in this sense he was a very good buy, he is what – 33? Meaning he will retire in 1 or 2 years. It also gives another option of someone is carded or injured

and any player deserves to and can be benched if their attitudes aren't right. It's not about personal opinions and likings when it comes to the real game, it is about who can perform and who is in better form. In a squad like Chelsea I wouldn't be surprised if all of the players find themselves on the bench sometime during this season.

@Ryan i argee with you and i would like to tell you that i watch the full matchs of chelsea i mean not every match but when i watch, i watch the 90 mins match, i remember when i watched chelsea vs totenham and mata came in the second half the whole game has shipped into chelsea way and when mata played the free kick from which john terry found the equalizer. i think chelsea should have won that game thanks to mata and this was really awesome :D

@Ryan and for real madrid i watch every game for them, i'm a big fan .. and yes casials is benched too under ancelotti management and it is expected to play in the UCL only this season and this is sucks i mean when madrid played against galatasaray casials came in from minute one and played i guess 10-15 min he made some very good saves and then he got injured again.. i mean i wish he come back again, he was the captain and the spirit of the team :(
